If you do this you get a totally posed portrait which can detract from what you may be trying to achieve. It's a subjective issue - but I generally shoot first and ask after. Naturally I'm not gonna aim my camera at someone holding a shotgun without asking first but generally this approach works better for my catch the subject unawares style.
